Tragic pictures of migrants and refugees enslaved in Libya or Frontex boats pushing back overpopulated lifeboats in the Mediterranean have been present in the media for a long time, highlighting severe human rights violations the European Union is complicit in. This workshop takes a critical look beyond the photos examining the EU’s external migration policy in the Sahel and Northern Africa. Which interests does the EU and the countries of origin and transfer pursue in their “cooperation”? What role do economics, stability, democracy, or development play? And what could humane European migration management in the region look like?
